Kayak Fishing - Trolling for Sea Bass

Trolling for Bass commercially known as ‘whiffing’ in Cornwall is an enjoyable way to target them from the kayak. Although it involves a lot paddling and can be hard work, it is good exercise trolling along the beautiful Cornish coastline admiring the scenery and wildlife with anticipation of the rod tip bending over severely as the Bass takes the lure.

The video below is about a trolling session with tips on the tackle and techniques used.

  1. I was trolling last weekend, only hooked up some Mackerel, but out again tomorrow - have you had much luck on the Lunkerhunt lures?

    1. Hi Stuart. No luck yet but early days and I have not had a chance to use them enough to judge however, I am sure they will be good and catch. I purchased them because they looked a very good alternative to the more publicised and well known paddle tail (rigged weedless and lightweight) Bass lures, which can be difficult to get hold of. As you know when it comes to lures, if the fish are not there and feeding then no matter what lure you use you will not catch. Good luck tomorrow, I am out but taking the wife out for a paddle on a new kayak but of course will be taking a rod with me as well. Rob.

  2. Enjoy watching your seabass instructional videos. Very similar to the Japanese seabass I used to target. For those they would show up during high tide plus or minus two hours around peak. Also at night during this tide change. The smaller soft plastic straight tail minnows were my go to and most productive...similar to the white ones on your video. Now I'm targeting the elusive white seabass in San Diego California. I hooked up with one near the kelp line using a Japanese vibration seabass lure which have not caught on in the states. I don't like trebles as they ended up snagging my sun pants and damage fish. I noticed you use single hooks on your hard baits. I hope you have an older post discussing this...will start searching now.
