Catching Fish for Dinner - BIG WHITING - No Time for Talking!

An extra video in between the normal main videos where I had no time to do commentary. I head out on the kayak to catch some fish for the dinner table at the time of year when at this location I have caught some good-sized Whiting in the past.

The weather forecast was to come in bad as regards rain therefore, it was a case of get out and get fishing quickly and get as much fishing time as I could before it became too uncomfortable. Whiting, a member of the Cod family are an underrated fish that are good to eat. They have a delicate white flaky flesh that lends itself well to poaching, steaming, shallow frying, and coating on batter. In the video below, I catch, clean, fillet, skin, and steam the Whiting en papillote. I hope the video footage will tell the story. Tight Lines and Bon Appétit.

Shore Fishing - Garfish - Float Spinning and Float Fishing vs Spinning

Garfish otherwise known as Needlefish or Long Nose Fish are not on everyone’s list as a fish to target but they do offer some good sport and if you do like eating fish are good to eat.

When I know, they are around in numbers I like to catch a few for the table and float fishing or float spinning a piece of bait is a great way to fish for them. Conventional spinning with a lure is another fun way to target them and in the video below, I use all methods as a float spinning with bait, float fishing with bait vs. normal spinning comparison.

The plan was to cook some crispy battered Squid rings and serve with a very simple to do sweet chilli sauce, which goes great with Squid. Video Below. Bon Appétit.

Shore Fishing - Spinning for Bass from the Rocks - Dexter Wedge

Metals lures (spinners) definitely have a use in modern Bass fishing and in certain situations can be a good choice.

In the video below, I fish a rock mark for Bass in difficult conditions using a Dexter Wedge a well-known lure that will take a variety of species.

Shore Saltwater FLY FISHING - Bass on SHRIMP FLIES

After 55 years of fishing, I have finally taken up Fly Fishing, Saltwater Fly Fishing. I headed to a mark to see if I could catch my first Bass on a fly. Live shrimp or prawn is a deadly way to fish for Bass so I decided to try shrimp flies at a mark where I know shrimps/prawns are definitely on the Bass menu in the hope it may tempt a Bass.

In the video below, I talk about the fly rod, fly line, DIY tapered leader, and the flies I am using.

There is always a first in fishing and I caught (by accident) a first for me and a very unexpected catch.

Kayak Fishing - No Gilthead Bream - Couch's and Black

I set out on the kayak to target Gilthead Bream however, targeting Gilthead Bream is one thing, but actually catching them is another and can be very hit and miss. Despite the fact, I could not find a Gilthead Bream other species of Bream, Couch’s Bream, and Black Bream gave me some sport and saved a blank day.

Catch, Dispatch, Cook, and Prepare SPIDER CRAB

Spider Crab are abundant in our waters and it’s a great pity that the majority caught are exported to Europe because if you like eating crab, and you know how to deal with them, they are good to eat.

In the video below, I catch a Spider Crab from the kayak using a collapsible pot, show how to dispatch the crab, and how to cook and prepare it. Some say all the meat of a Spider Crab is in the claws but in this video, I show that there is plenty of meat to be extracted from the body of the crab. The crab is served with a mustard dipping sauce from a simple recipe. Bon Appétit!

Kayak Fishing - This Trip Didn't Quite Go to Plan!

Sometimes when you go out to sea to do some kayak fishing with a plan of what to fish for the methods you want to use and the marks you want to fish it does not always go to plan particularly when it comes to safety and staying within your comfort zone.

The video below was one of those trips where the unexpected conditions meant I had to change the plan and make the most of what was available and where I could fish.

The video below, shows the catching, cleaning, preparing, and cooking of the Mackerel in two different ways. Sometimes the best recipes for Mackerel are the simple ones and in this video, I simply bake a Mackerel and smoke some fillets.
