Kayak Fishing - Drifting for Sea Bass in Shallow Water Using Lures

Sea Bass are a great fish to fish for and a great fish to catch and drifting with lures over shallow rough ground can be an effective way of targeting them.

Below is a video is about casting and jigging weedless soft plastics whilst drifting over kelp and rocks in water up to about 25 feet.

  1. another great film...as always. I went out for a couple of hours from Loe Beach last week....wonderful trip...no fish for me though......next time! Do the big green buoys mark the edge of the deep channel?

  2. Thanks for the comment. Basically, yes they do. The big green buoys mark the east side of the channel and the big red buoys mark the west side. For example, if you paddled out from Mylor heading towards St Mawes, you will see two big red buoys. One is called the North Bank Buoy and the other is the St Just Pool Buoy, Ships traveling up river from Falmouth would stay to the right of those buoys keeping in the channel. Out from Loe beach, the green buoys mark the east side of the channel, and ships traveling up river would need to keep to the left of those buoys. The buoys are not set in the deepest part but up the bank a bit in probably, about 30ft- 40ft of water. Paddle out a bit from those buoys in the direction I mentioned i.e. left or right and you will be in the deeper water. Rob.

  3. Thank you....that makes more sense to me. Despite not catching any fish...when I went out last week....I watched the full moon set as the sun rose....it was a magical couple of hours....at one point I moved off the east shore to cross over to the west...I found myself in a shoal of bass (I presume they were bass because they were feeding on the surface...the water was mill pond flat and the fish seemed to be after moths that were dropping into the water....every few seconds there were fish breaking the surface in an area about the size of a tennis court....it was great just to be there....all other daily worries were well aside....the early morning bird song from the woodland and scrub by the shore was nothing short of mindblowing....a great trip...I look forward to many more trips like it....thank you again for inspiring me to make it out there on my Yak....there's just nothing like it. Ben.

    1. That's great Ben and thank you for telling me about your trip. As you have realised, it is not all about the fishing but when the fish start coming in as well you will have even more fun. Rob.

  4. Brilliant video Rob very envious, do you use a drogue when drift fishing? I have just purchased one and fitting an anchor trolley this weekend, caught my first fish (pollock) last week off the kayak at Port Holland, can't wait to catch some bass

  5. Hi Andy. Many thanks for the comment and great about the first fish. I use a drift every time I drift fish except when it is flat calm but when there is a breeze pushing you along the drift chute is a great asset. When vertical jigging with lures or drift fishing with bait on the bottom I have the drift chute at the bow, but when casting lures from the kayak as in this video and in the previous video I have it at the stern: https://youtu.be/8wHt-IrSY8o Rob.

    1. Thank you Mick. I appreciate your encouraging comments. Hope your fishing is going well. I went to C yesterday from the shore (rocks) and so much loose weed in the water, great patches of the brown slimy stuff making fishing difficult. Had a small Bass. A guy I know who regularly scuba dives there went out at low water and came straight back in again because the water was so dirty with the weed. Would be very difficult to fish from the beach with a surf running stirring it all up but hopefully it will clear soon.
