Kayak Fishing - Fishing for Food Using Mixed Methods

If you enjoy eating fish and shellfish there is something special about sitting down to the dinner table to have a meal from something you have caught yourself.

In the video below, I set out to catch fish for the dinner table using mixed methods to catch a variety of fish such as Plaice, Mackerel, Herring Pollack, and Spider Crabs using collapsible pots.

  1. Another nice video Rob. A tip for your pollack/cod - try bleeding them as well. If you cut the Gill rakers and let them bleed out I've found the flesh is firmer, whiter and cleaner.

    1. Hi Mike. Thank you for the comment and your input. I have heard about the benefits of bleeding but yet to try it. Will try it in the future and see the difference it makes. Thanks Rob.

  2. I think you'll see a difference - not just pollack and cod either!

  3. Wow what a feast Rob, well done on a cracking video, i was out on the Fal today and had 3 small Bass (all returned of course) and lost a much larger one on the rocks, so hopefully things are looking good for the year ahead :-)

    1. Thanks Andy. Great to hear you caught a few Bass even if the good one got away. As you say that's a good sign for later in the year and I will start to target them July onwards. We are lucky to have the Fal on our doorstep. Maybe get together this year weather permitting either on the main coast or the Fal. Have you fished Lath Rock yet?

  4. Hi Rob, not managed to get out to Lath rock yet, it's something I have been wanting to do for a while now, but the weather hasn't been playing ball, that's why I have been out on the Fal quiet a few times, definitely lucky having the Fal on the doorstep
I managed Gull rock a few weeks ago and had a nice couple of Pollock
Yes definitely would be good to meet up coast or Fal

  5. Hi Rob,
Just come across your website and all your great videos! I'm just getting into kayak fishing and interested in trying out some crab pots. Do you know where I could get the round collapsible pots you have? I've looked online though not been able to find any stockists.

Thanks in advance, and great work!

  6. Hi Rich. Thank you for the comment and glad you enjoy the videos. Unfortunately, the round pots are no longer available in the UK. However, if you could email me at cornishshoreandkayakfisherman@gmail.com I can provide a phone number and details of a supplier of suitable pots but cannot put his phone number online. Rob.
